Jana Emburey engages with themes of cellular division, duality, interconnectivity and our relationship with nature. From delicate ink drawings on paper to deeply pigmented raw canvases, process is integral to Emburey's work. Drawings evolve over time, forming organic shapes that represent humans, cells, natural organisms and the patterns of their behaviours. Paintings are often built of numerous layers of ink, watercolour and diluted acrylic paint. Moving the materials aross the surface with various tools, and by hand, Emburey allows the materials to find their own place within the work. By manoeuvring between the accidental and intentional, Emburey's paintings gradually evolve to become otherworldly, yet familiar.
