Patterned Land: By Wendy Sutherland

In September 2024, Wendy Sutherland will become the first Artist to embrace the full scale of Browns Gallery’s expansive new space in Inverness, with an uncompromising and glorious exhibition of new works entitled ‘Patterned Land’.

Based in Brora, roughly an hour north of Inverness, Wendy is situated in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. It is here that she creates her works, similarly rooted by a sense of place. Wendy describes herself as a Highland Landscape Artist, but her artworks speak of so much more. Through a deeper consideration of the human relationship to land, Wendy redefines the boundaries of what a Highland Landscape Artist can and should be.

There is balance in everything that Wendy creates; an equal consideration for the expanses and minutiae of the land; an appreciation for the beauty held in darkness and light alike. Her process of painting is a physical one, often throwing pigments and paints at the surface, mimicking the immediacy of her ever changing environment. She contrasts this with a delicate and somewhat meditative approach to drawing, pushing and pulling each artwork to nurture them into fruition. And whilst each artwork differs vastly from the next, they all remain uniquely imprinted by Wendy’s mindful curiosity.

To experience ‘Patterned Land’ is to surrender to the wildness of the landscape and allow Wendy Sutherland to find the peace. She translates the whipping of the wind, the sheen of the sun and the dampness of a dreich day into a harmony which she so generously invites her audience to embrace — showing at Browns Gallery in Inverness, from 14th of September to the 12th of October 2024.
