Limro: New Works by Laura Drever

26 October - 23 November 2024 Inverness
  • Overview

Limro – n. Phosphorescence on objects in the open air, caused by unusual atmospheric conditions.

For our Gallery Director, Gordon Brown, Orkney has become a favourite escape —  “It is a joy to visit Orkney, regardless of the weather or time of year. I have always known it to be an inspiring place.”

So inspiring, that in October 2023, the Gallery welcomed thirteen Orcadian Artists to exhibit in a show entitled ‘Orcadia’. Glimmering amidst the cohort, with a collection of luxuriant golden landscapes, was Laura Drever.

Now, in October of 2024, the Gallery welcomes Laura back to Inverness for her solo show, Limro. Aglow with the discernible golden marks that we now recognise to be those of Laura Drever, this show continues to hold a candle to the inspiring place that is Orkney.

Through a series of canvases, Laura guides us through her homeland, inviting us to experience it’s unique character. Her works, vibrating with the vitality of Orkney’s ubiquitous wind, remind us of what it is to be alive amidst the most powerful of natural landscapes.

We’re thrilled to welcome Laura Drever into the Gallery again; delighted to shine a light on one of Orkney’s many talented creatives; and positive that by Laura’s hand, many others will be able to experience the essence of this inspiring place.

Limro – n. Phosphorescence on objects in the open air, caused by unusual atmospheric conditions.

Limro is a new collection inspired by walks in and around Orkney. Created over eighteen months, walks have included the Southern islands of Orkney including Hoy, Flotta, South Ronaldsay, Burray, looking over to Fara, Cava, Hunda and Swona. Spending time walking south from my home seemed appropriate for this new body of work. Walking throughout the year (regardless of the weather) and tracing the coast of the islands is an important part of my practice. Each season brings new colours and new growth. The quality of light can change from moment to moment. The summer brings days where the light shimmers and when the winter darkness comes, the landscape can look and feel different all over again. Autumn is golden and in spring the greens and blues start to shine. This unique light is what I am keen to capture – its movement and the patterns created. The way the wind blows across a field, mimicking the movements of the sea or the ripples made in a lochan, whose reflection has a picture-perfect image of the clouds above. Language that describes the landscapes walked, is an important finale to each artwork. Often choosing placenames from Orkney maps, Orcadian dialect from The Orkney Dictionary or words from The Orkney Norn , giving context to each painting. Perhaps acting as a memoir and a way for the viewer to get a further sense of place. Orkney is my home and continues to be my inspiration.
